JOB HUNTING … I’M HAVING NO LUCK!

ADVICE FOR JOB SEEKERS

Employers today are faced with different circumstances within their business than they did three years ago.  The COVID pandemic has affected the jobs market in ways that were never imagined.  Australia, like many other nations around the world, is experiencing a skills shortage.

What does this mean?  This means there are not enough ‘skilled’ workers to fill skilled roles.  The Australian government is taking measures to cope, but will it be enough? The truth is, the Australian jobs market has always been tough, but now it is even tougher than before.

STANDING OUT FROM THE CROWD

As a job seeker, there are some things that can be done to help you ‘stand out from the crowd’ when applying for roles.

What can you do as a job seeker in today’s world of looking for a job?

You can:

  • Follow traditional methods of looking for a job ... register on SEEK, check jobs boards, newspapers etc

  • Register with job agencies

  • Update your LinkedIn profile to 'Open to Work'

  • Reach out to your networks

  • Connect with like minded people on social media platforms

  • Get on foot and out to local businesses … many have ‘looking for xxx staff’ signs on their windows

Now is a good time to review your job search approach.  One very simple step to accelerating your chances is re-doing your resume.

WHAT DO I INCLUDE IN MY RESUME?

Your resume should include some key things.  Remember, you are presenting yourself to an employer in the best light possible.  This is your first impression, and first impressions count!

Key tips for your resume:

  • Include a clear, concise objective, no more than 3 - 4 lines

  • Outline your criteria to include your education, experience (job history), skills, qualifications and awards

  • Ensure your details are up to date to your most recent working role

  • Include roles that are applicable to the job you are applying for (there is no need to list your first job at KFC 20 years ago!)

  • Ensure your formatting is clear and well set out - is each section easy to read?

  • Check your resume is free from spelling errors

  • If the application requests a cover letter, ensure you include one

So, accelerate your chances by re-doing that resume, be clear on what YOU want and always follow up on all job applications … until you receive a definitive ‘no’. Get out there and apply, apply, apply!  Stay positive through the process.
